How to pick a collar for your sighthound

Writer: KegdogKegdog

Curved Buckle Collars

Curved or 'Fishtail' collars are great for two reasons. Firstly, the wider section spreads pressure across a larger surface area making it a safer collar. Secondly, the curve makes it harder for your dog to slip out of the collar which is very helpful, as many hound breeds have very small heads.

If you'd like extra support for your dog's neck, you may wish to consider a padded collar instead. These collars have a cushioned interior and have a waterproof inner. They come in a range of colours to match the outer leather.

House Collars / ID Tag Collars

If you use a harness to walk your dog, you may want to consider a house collar, also known as a tag collar. These lightweight, low-profile dog collars are designed to be as minimal as possible. They allow you to be compliant with UK laws stating all dogs in public places must wear a tag attached to a collar.

This collar design also comes in a rolled leather option which is slimmer. It's a great option if your dog has a longer coat like some lurcher types as the rolled leather reduces hair-breakage.

Wide Leather Semi-Slip Collar

These collar types are wide all the way around. The slip feature is great for dogs that don't like tight collars, but allows you to tighten the collar if needed. The shape of the leather stops the slip action from tightening beyond the dog's neck size.

We also make this style of collar in a curved, fishtail shape.

Puppies and Italian Greyhounds

It can be hard to pick a collar for your dog when they are young. We recommend puppy sized hound collars suitable for iggies and young pups. These leather collars can include some growing room if required and are available in a range of colours. We don't advise using slip styles with tiny neck sizes, at least until your dog is an adult in the case of Italian Greyhounds.
