When leather gets dirty, it isn't advised to wash it in the same way that you would with fabric. Follow these easy steps detailing how to clean your leather collar or lead.

Cleaning your leather

We recommend cleaning any dirt and debris off your leather collar or lead with a soft damp cloth. Saddle Soap can be used but if it is used too often, it will dry out your leather and can cause cracking. Do not use detergents, bleach or abrasive cleaning products on your leather.

How to store your leather

If your collar or lead gets damp, remove excess water with a dry cloth and leave to dry at room temperature. Wet leather is vulnerable to sun damage so it is advised to store it away from direct light.

Leather should be stored by being hung from the hardware on a hook or rail. Alternatively it is also fine to store it laid flat. These options will help it to keep the correct shape.

Store at room temperature, away from sunlight or heat sources and allow adequate ventilation to prevent mould or mildew.

Conditioning Treatments for your leather

Using a conditioning treatment every three months will keep your leather soft, strong and will prevent cracking. Before you condition, please follow the steps above detailing how to clean a leather dog collar or lead.

When using a new leather soap, oil or cream conditioner, patch testing on a discreet area of the item is advised. This will ensure the coloured dye remains even in your leather.

Apply with a soft sponge, cloth or soft hair-bristled brush if you have one and buff into the leather. Allow to absorb into the skin for as long as directed or 20mins if using oil. Use a clean dry cloth or paper towel to rub away any excess after this time period and again before the next use of the leather item.

We have a Neatsfoot oil blend available on our website which has been tested on all leather types sold by Kegdog.
