Braided vs Flat Leather Dog Collars: Does Braiding Make Leather More Comfortable?

When choosing a leather dog collar, most people think about colour, width and style. But the way leather is worked can make just as much difference to how a collar feels and moves.

At Kegdog, we make both flat and braided leather dog collars in our workshop, using the same quality leather. The difference is in the construction.

Why Is Braided Leather More Flexible?

A traditional flat leather collar is made from a continuous strip of leather. It provides a smooth, supportive band around the dog's neck, with a familiar, classic appearance.

Our braided collars start with the same leather, but we work it into an interwoven pattern. This allows the leather to move more freely, creating a leather dog collar that is noticeably more flexible and comfortable than our equivalent flat leather designs.

It's one of the things we enjoy about leatherworking: the same material can behave quite differently depending on how you work it.

Is a Braided Leather Dog Collar More Comfortable?

The additional flexibility allows our braided collars to bend and follow the natural curve of a dog's neck more easily.

This can make them a lovely choice for everyday wear, particularly if you prefer a collar with a softer, more flexible feel.

Of course, comfort also depends on getting the right fit and width for your dog. That's why we make our collars to measure rather than relying on a limited selection of standard sizes.

What About Strength and Durability?

Braiding isn't simply decorative. It's a traditional leatherworking technique that combines individual sections of leather into a flexible, practical construction.

Our braided collars are made with the same attention to materials, fittings and finishing as the rest of our leather range.

As with any collar, choosing the appropriate construction for your dog's size and intended use is important.

Should I Choose Braided or Flat Leather?

Both have their place, and much comes down to what you prefer.

Choose braided leather if you like a flexible collar with a distinctive woven appearance and traditional handcrafted character.

Choose flat leather if you prefer a smooth, classic collar.

Whichever you choose, our collars are made to measure in our Derbyshire workshop, with a choice of leather colours and fittings to make them your own.
