Selecting a comfortable, lightweight collar for your small dog breeds can be a challenge. Thankfully, at Kegdog, it was one of our earliest ventures. We have been focused on comfort and collar weight for many years and we have a few options up our sleeves to help you out.
At Kegdog, our collars are made to measure rather than sold in standard sizes. Our small-breed range includes lightweight and slim-cut versions of several of our regular designs, giving owners a choice of collar styles without overwhelming a smaller neck.
Best Buckle Collars for Small Dogs and Puppies
For many puppies and small dogs, a traditional buckle collar is a practical place to start when looking for the best leather dog collar. The adjustment holes allow the fit to be altered, which can be particularly useful for puppies as their measurements change.
Our slim flat leather buckle collars are 12mm wide, keeping the collar in proportion with shorter and narrower necks. They provide the familiar shape of a traditional leather collar without the width and bulk of our larger designs.
Rolled leather buckle collars offer another lightweight option. Their rounded construction creates a smooth profile against the dog's neck and coat and can be particularly useful for longer-coated dogs where a flat collar isn't preferred.
Both styles are made to measure, so we can consider the individual dog's measurements, coat and stage of growth rather than relying on a generic puppy or small-breed size.
Best Hound Collar for Small Dogs and Puppies
Dogs with narrow necks don't necessarily need a conventional narrow collar. Hound-shaped collars use a wider centre section to create a different profile across the neck, but a full-sized hound collar can be disproportionately large on very small dogs.
Our Puppy and Italian Greyhound collar is a scaled-down version of this idea. It is narrower and lighter than our standard hound collars, giving smaller dogs the characteristic shaped profile without unnecessary width or weight.
Best Slips and Martingales - For Small Dogs
Small dogs can also benefit from specialist slip and martingale designs, particularly where an owner prefers a collar that can sit more loosely when it isn't under tension.
Our small-dog options include martingales, slip collars and rolled leather varieties. Each offers a slightly different combination of adjustment, profile and function.
We don't recommend these designs for breeds with sensitive necks.
The adjustable martingale provides additional flexibility in fit, while the rolled martingale combines the martingale mechanism with a smooth, rounded leather profile. Our rolled slip collar offers a simple design that sits loose at rest and tightens when tension is applied.
As with all slip and martingale designs, accurate measurement is particularly important. We make these collars to the individual dog's measurements rather than selecting a standard small, medium or large size.
